How far apart should coat hooks be placed?
Things to consider when placing your coat hooks
When positioning your coat hooks, or any other hooks for that matter, it is important to consider the size of the room, who will be using the coat hooks and whether the items you choose to hang can be accessed easily.
For example, many different hooks placed in a smaller room could minimise the space available and create an overcrowded look.
If you have little ones, consider holding their coat hooks lower to the ground so they can reach them themselves.
You should also be mindful of the accessibility of hooks so that wheelchair users or anyone with restricted physicality or mobility can retrieve their belongings in a way that is convenient for them.
Positioning your coat hooks
Once you are confident that you have accounted for your household's various members or guests, your coat hooks should be placed to reflect this.
As a general rule, it is recommended that you place 6-9” between each coat hook. However, this can vary depending on different factors.
If the area is specifically for children’s items, 4-6” spaces would be suitable for hanging coats, jackets or small bags.
For heavier items, such as particularly large coats or backpacks, you can maximise the space between hooks to approximately 9-12”. You may also want to create this extra space if your hooks are particularly big.
